What is it?

A Psychodiagnostic Evaluation assesses a person’s specific ways of thinking, personality characteristics, and mood-related factors (e.g., depression, anxiety, etc.) that may be interfering with overall functioning. These evaluations are used to make formal mental health diagnoses using structured and evidence-based measures. Psychodiagnostic Evaluations are useful for making or clarifying psychiatric diagnoses, differentiating between diagnoses, and providing information to guide treatment planning and next steps.

What does it assess?

Psychodiagnostic Evaluations formally and comprehensively assess a person’s emotional functioning, personality, patterns of thinking, and behaviors.

What does it diagnose?

While not exhaustive, Psychodiagnostic Evaluations are used to assess for the following:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety (including specific forms of anxiety like panic disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder)
  • Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • Personality disorders
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Eating disorders
  • Substance use disorders
  • Other psychological disorders outlined by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-5th Edition (DSM-5)

What can I expect?

A Psychodiagnostic Evaluation assesses current mental health symptoms and clinical presentation in order to provide diagnostic impressions that help a person make sense of their difficulties. Based on presenting concerns, the process includes a structured clinical interview, cultural and developmental assessment, rating scales, and self-report measures. Following the evaluation, a brief (1-2 page) report is provided with diagnoses and specific treatment recommendations.

Time: Psychodiagnostic Evaluations can take anywhere from 2-4 hours, depending on the referral question and areas of concern. Reports are typically provided within 1-2 weeks following the end of the assessment process.
